The State of Hand Hygiene

The critical importance of diligent hand hygiene and its correlation with healthcare associated infections is well-documented. Organizations such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have established the importance of hand hygiene and have recommended protocol for patient safety.

The widely accepted standard for compliance is WHO's "My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene," which includes:

1. Before touching a patient
2. Before a clean/antiseptic procedure
3. After body fluid exposure risk
4. After touching a patient
5. After touching patient surroundings

These guidelines go even further to recommend effective techniques for hand hygiene and much more.

Yet, despite the well-documented protocol for proper hand hygiene, compliance is less than 40%. Anecdotal observation suggests hand hygiene compliance is considerably lower.

Current hand hygiene compliance monitoring is performed primarily through direct observation, a method that lacks objectivity and consistency.

While some healthcare facilities have incorporated hand hygiene monitoring technology into their environments, their shortcomings are well-documented.
